Junior Development & Tournaments

The Tournament and Development Committee provides opportunities for talented and enthusiastic junior players with ERT member clubs to play representative tennis at a higher level.

Each year the Committee is responsible for:

  1. Hosting the Eastern Region Tennis Junior Tournament.

  2. Coordinating the teams representing ERT in Tennis Victoria’s Association Junior Pennant competition

  3. Coordinating the teams representing ERT in inter-association challenge matches and invitational events.

Tournaments

  • Association Junior Pennant (AJP), formerly known as Association Junior League (AJL), is a team based inter-association representative competition conducted by Tennis Victoria annually.

    It is played over a ten week season plus finals on Sunday mornings in late August to early November. ERT enters teams in the 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and Open junior age groups. The selection of players is based on merit and limited trials for final positions as needed.

    • Four player teams

    • Play commences at 8:30am and concludes by 1:00pm

    • Four singles rubbers and two doubles sets each round

    To be eligible a player must have played at least six matches for their club in ERT’s association competition over the previous year. (Note: this does not include Tennis Victoria’s pennant matches) and be available for the duration of the season.

  • Each year, over Easter, ERT runs a Tennis Australia gold status sanctioned junior tournament in the 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 16 & Under age brackets and offers national ranking points.

Invitational Events

  • Daphne Fancutt Shield is a team based inter-association representative event hosted by Waverley Tennis. Named after Daphne Fancutt who represented Australia internationally in the 1950’s, this event is held yearly for associations in Victoria and one association from Queensland. The first Daphne Fancutt Shield event was held in 1991.

    It is played on the weekend prior to the Australian Open in January and provides players with the opportunity to represent their association in a team environment. ERT enters a team in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups. The selection of players is based on merit and limited trials for final positions as needed

    • Four player team (2 girls & 2 boys for U14 and U16)

    • Two player team (1 girl & 1 boy for U18)

    Current Victorian metropolitan associations include Waverley, ERT, Peninsula, North Eastern and Northern Suburban.

  • The Mrs Pat Pearce Shield is a team based inter-association representative event that commenced in 1954 with a long and prestigious history. A new format was introduced in 1989 and the events’ name was changed to Pat Pearce Carnival.

    ERT enters a sixteen player team: 4 girls and 4 boys in the 13 & Under age group and 4 girls and 4 boys in the 15 & Under age group.

    Each player participates in a best of three sets singles and a best of two sets doubles against each of the other three associations.  The selection of players is based on merit and limited trials for final positions as needed. 

    Associations take turns in hosting the carnival and the event is played on the last weekend of the September school holidays between ERT, Waverley Tennis, North Suburban and North Eastern associations.

  • The Alicia Molik Cup is a metropolitan and regional team event conducted by Tennis Victoria for 12/u boys and girls from across Victoria. The competition is a round robin format with teams consisting of two boys singles, two girls singles and two mixed doubles rubbers sets. This event is run with the support of the Kooyong Foundation and the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, and held at Kooyong.

    This event is usually held in March. Selection is primarily based on UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) with limited trials for final positions as needed. To express interest in having your child considered, please submit the form by clicking the link below.

  • The Frank Sedgman Cup is an annual event for 11/u boys and girls from across Victoria for teams from metropolitan associations and country regions. The competition is a round robin format with teams consisting of two boys singles, two girls singles and two mixed doubles rubbers.

    This event is usually held in July or August, and in recent years has been played at a venue in East Gippsland. ERT has recently won this event in 2018 and 2023. To express interest in having your child considered, please submit the form by clicking the link below.

  • This event is usually held in April, and is for 2 boys and 2 girls aged 10 or under from each participating association in Victoria. Typically there will be 16 participating associations, the event is conducted at Kooyong Tennis Club, and sponsored by the Kooyong Foundation. The Cup was won by ERT in 2022. The 2023 event was washed out on the second day. The Development committee usually conducts trials of possible candidates early in the year.

  • This is the premier Challenge event each year, conducted by Tennis Victoria, usually at a regional centre (recently on grass courts at Horsham, Wodonga and Yarrawonga). It involves 2 boys and 2 girls from each association in the 12, 14, 16 and 18 year age groups. This event is played is usually played on the last weekend in February. Each team plays others in the pool, involving singles and mixed doubles sets, followed by finals.

    Selection is primarily based on UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) with limited trials for final positions as needed.
